Let's have an open and thoughtful discussion about the complex issues surrounding adoption and reproductive rights. This can be an emotional topic, so I encourage listening with empathy and checking assumptions. To start, I share a bit about what initially drew me to research adoption's social and political dynamics. We then explore common narratives around international adoption and unpack complex truths. Next, we discuss research on women denied abortions and how relinquishment decisions play out. The data reveals some surprising trends. We also examine how government policies like paid leave and childcare access could reduce pressure to choose adoption. Supporting vulnerable families emerges as an important theme. Additionally, we tackle tricky subjects like privilege, race, and the promotion of middle-class ideals in the adoption process. There's much to reflect on. Ultimately, I try providing advice for well-intentioned adoptive parents questioning past decisions. Centering the adoptee's evolving needs is key. There are no easy solutions here, but open and thoughtful dialogue across differences can lead to positive change. I welcome reactions and reflections.
